WEEKLY SCHEDULES, UPDATES AND WISDOM
FROM THE COACHING TEAM

The Hawks are Hunting Their Prey this Season!
PLEASE NOTE: We will have regular practice on Monday, 5/25, at the Davis and West Sac locations. Wednesday’s practice will be at UC Davis’ track. What a big meet for the Hawks in Modesto this weekend! The Tom Moore Classic lived up to its great history, with good weather and fast competition. Up first on Saturday morning, the six Hawks who ran the 3k all ran PRs! Mia broke her own team record and 12 minutes with a 11:59! David ran a 16 second PR breaking 10:50, Evan ran a 2

Hawks Are Flying Now!
PLEASE NOTE: Monday’s Practice is combined for Davis and West Sac athletes at River City High School! Wednesday will be separate practices in Davis and West Sac. The Hawks had a fun (but windy!) meet yesterday in Chico, with several athletes running PRs and many doing new events like the 100m and the 400m! While we are proud of all of our Hawks, I will just call out one in this blog: Will Welch won both the 400m and the 800m and ran a great time in the 1600m – way to go! I

Hawks Show Up and Show Off at Second Inderkum Meet
This week our flying Hawks took to the track for the second time at Inderkum, and once again we saw a significant number of personal bests! From David Rodriguez running his first sub 5-minute 1500m to Cam getting under 7 minutes for the first time, nearly all of our Hawks continue to see improvement from week to week. In addition, we had some medal-winning performances! Hawks placing in the top three in their age group to earn hardware include: Cypress Connelly (3rd in 9-10 g

Moving into the Final Stretch for the Season
It may be hard to believe, but we are already in the second half of our track season. Our runners are hitting their strides, getting faster and stronger, and learning how to race. Now we get more serious. This past weekend our runners got to participate in a low-key intrasquad meet – a great entry point for some and a fun way to lift each other up as a team. Even without other teams to push us, we still had a whole slew of PRs! Way to go, Hawks! Our next competition is an

Hawks Have Another Big PR Weekend!
The Hawks competed this weekend at the Glenn Rogers Distance Carnival, running in both the 800m and the 1600m Middle School events. As we like to remind our athletes, every race is ultimately against yourself, so it didn’t matter how many older kids might cross the line before you. Given that, we had an AMAZING meet, with almost every Hawks running a PR! And of those few who didn’t quite run their fastest times ever, the effort and drive was apparent on their smiling little f

Halden a Huge Success for Hawks!
The conditions could not have been better for the Halden Youth/Middle School 1600m on Saturday in Davis! Thin clouds kept the heat low, while a cool northern breeze was enough to stir the heart but not impact the running. The crowd was large and music was energetic, so our Hawks were really feeling the moment. All this adds up to a spectacular day for our runners, and some amazing improvements! Starting with the oldest Hawk and working our way down, Isaac ran 6:02, improvin

Hawks Weather the Storm in Fairfield
The Hawks took it to the competition this past Saturday at Armijo High School in Fairfield. Despite the cold and the rain, we had a number of first-time Hawks competitors and a handful of PRs from our stoic fighters. We had big personal bests (PRs) in the 800m from Dalton and Paxton, while William Gavia, and Evan ran PRs in the 1500m. Josie and Henry tied their best times on the 800m. Meanwhile, we had brave, first-time track races from Lulu, Magnolia, Nathaniel, Hugo, Dyla

Time for Our Hawks to Fly!
This week we have practice at our regular locations on Monday (in both West Sac and Davis), and then we will all meet in West Sacramento at the Bridgeway Lakes Boathouse on Wednesday. This coming Saturday, April 11 th , is our next meet which is going to be held at Armijo High School in Fairfield . The timing for the meet looks like it will be similar to the past meet: the 1500m races are scheduled to begin at 9am, so athletes need to arrive by 8am, while the 800m will pro

Another Work Week for the Hawks
PLEASE NOTE: Both practices (Monday and Wednesday) will be in Davis for everyone this week. Monday we will meet at Community Park at 5:30, and Wednesday we will meet at the UC Davis Track at 5:30. Please try to be to practice on time. We want to start practice at 5:30 each day, and arriving late undermines your athlete’s ability to properly warm up and get the most out of practice. This week we continue to ramp up our practices – without a meet this coming weekend we c

Fast Start to the Hawks’ Season
Several returning Hawks competed this weekend at the STS 2026 Opener, and many of them ran their fastest times or PRs! While the conditions weren’t the best (and the meet took longer than we had hoped), our kids ran really strongly and had a great time. Those improving their PRs include Sonia (in both 1500 and 800), Amelia (800), Josie (1500 and 800), Maddi (1500), Evan (1500), and Will Welch (1500). William Gavia and Dalton set their personal bests as well! Not only that,

First Week of Practice is Finally Here!
Welcome to the first week of the Delta Hawks track season, and we are so excited to get started again! For those of you returning from previous years, there are going to be some changes, so we will try to cover some of those things in our next few blog posts. First, I want to thank our amazing social chairs and team managers for putting on our big kick-off meeting on Thursday! For those of you who could make it, you might know some of the following comments, but I want to mak

Nationals Wrap Up
The conditions have varied over the six years the Delta Hawks have competed at USATF Junior Olympics Cross Country National Championships. In 2019 in Wisconsin, the Hawks faced bitter cold with temperatures in the teens, but with clear skies. In 2021 in Paris, Kentucky, the Hawks found themselves dealing with tornadoes the night before the meet, cold rain, slippery mud (John Barreiro lost his shoe during his race), and temperatures in the 30s. But the conditions for this year

Off-Season Officially Begins
Well, Hawks, we have officially entered the off-season. It is a sad time when we say goodbye to cross country season, but we all have a chance to get some serious work in to set ourselves up for a successful track season! So many Hawks tore it up this fall, we might have to change our name to the KILLER HAWKS . We all know how hard it is to compare times from one course to the next, but we can say that nearly all of our runners this fall improved their overall mile pace ov

Hawks Compete Well at Association Championships
There was an expectant hum through the young athletes, parents, and coaches in Golden Gate Park this Sunday as the colorful team tents lined up in the grass below the towering Eucalyptus trees bordering Lindley Meadow. Every athlete felt the fluttering excitement of competing for a chance to travel to the USATF Junior Olympics National meet in Indiana. The Hawks gathered at our team tent were nervous but happy to be sharing this challenge with their teammates. At the beginn

Hawks Wrap Up Their Journey of Faith
As our Champion Season rolls into the USATF Pacific Association Championships next Sunday in San Francisco, it is a good time to reflect on the season. What we ask of our Hawks going into cross country season isn’t minor – its big. We talk about distance running as a sport (not a hobby), and we train like we mean it. While we haven’t put it this way before, I’ve thought a lot about it lately and what we ask our young athletes to commit to is a JOURNEY OF FAITH. What I hope

Distance Running Homo Sapiens
It is amazing to see how our Hawks improve over a season. So many of our youth start each year wondering if distance running is for them – by the end of the season they are all jogging together, chatting and joking, like distance running is part of their DNA. Scientists say that, in fact, it is part of our DNA! It brings us coaches such joy to experience this transformation each season. This week the schedule is as follows: MONDAY Meet at the BOATHOUSE – 5:30pm Swamp Loop

The Future of the Delta Hawks: Guest Post from Alicia Mittleman
In 2019, Dusty Robinson and Phil Ogilvie founded the Delta Hawks with the goal of shaping confident and competitive young runners in the Sacramento region. Despite the challenges of parent coaches and volunteers leading the team for the past six years, we have seen great success at the regional and national level. Looking ahead, we are determined to ensure the Delta Hawks continue to thrive and be respected in the running community. To set the Hawks up for long-term viability

Hawks Finish Regular Season With a Bang
Today the Hawks finished their regular season with a USATF meet in Rancho Cordova. Nearly 20 Hawks competed in the age-group meet, with many fine performances. Mia sprinted at the finish to outkick two other girls and finish second in the 9-10 girl’s race. Jayson ran his fastest pace of the year to finish fifth in the 8U boy’s race. And David ran strong throughout the 4k course on the 11-13 boy’s race to finish fourth. Way to go Hawks! For those continuing with us through t

Regular Season Drawing to a Close
PLEASE NOTE: Practice this week will be BACK at the Boathouse this week. While there were no cross country meets this weekend, we had a number of Hawks (and parents!) run at the Clarksburg Country Run on Sunday. Shout out to all who won their age group races, including Isaac and Sonia in the 10k, as well as Amelia Weeks in the 5k. David and Kate also placed second in their 5k age groups. Way to go, Hawks! Next Sunday we are competing in a USATF meet with age groups in Ran
