There was an expectant hum through the young athletes, parents, and coaches in Golden Gate Park this Sunday as the colorful team tents lined up in the grass below the towering Eucalyptus trees bordering Lindley Meadow. Every athlete felt the fluttering excitement of competing for a chance to travel to the USATF Junior Olympics National meet in Indiana. As our Champion Season rolls into the USATF Pacific Association Championships next Sunday in San Francisco, it is a good time to reflect on the season. What we ask of our Hawks going into cross country season isn’t minor – its big. We talk about distance running as a sport (not a hobby), and we train like we mean it. While we haven’t put it this way before, I’ve thought a lot about it lately and what we ask our young athletes to commit to is a JOURNEY OF FAITH.   What I hope

It is amazing to see how our Hawks improve over a season. So many of our youth start each year wondering if distance running is for them – by the end of the season they are all jogging together, chatting and joking, like distance running is part of their DNA. Scientists say that, in fact, it is part of our DNA! Today the Hawks finished their regular season with a USATF meet in Rancho Cordova. Nearly 20 Hawks competed in the age-group meet, with many fine performances. Mia sprinted at the finish to outkick two other girls and finish second in the 9-10 girl’s race. Jayson ran his fastest pace of the year to finish fifth in the 8U boy’s race. And David ran strong throughout the 4k course on the 11-13 boy’s race to finish fourth. Way to go Hawks!   For those continuing with us through t

PLEASE NOTE: Practice this week will be BACK at the Boathouse this week.   While there were no cross country meets this weekend, we had a number of Hawks (and parents!) run at the Clarksburg Country Run on Sunday. Shout out to all who won their age group races, including Isaac and Sonia in the 10k, as well as Amelia Weeks in the 5k. David and Kate also placed second in their 5k age groups. On Saturday, the Hawks ran like champions at the Chico Autumn Invitational! The weather was perfect, the course was simple and true, and our runners showed up to compete. The “Top 7” race pitted five of our best boys and girls against the best runners on the club and middle school teams in attendance, and we took it to them!   The girl’s team, led by Sonia’s first place finish, finished second overall in a field of six teams.
