Hawks Queue Up to Fly at First Meet!

This Saturday, The Hawks arrive at Lagoon Valley to compete at the first meet of the season, and we can’t wait! More about the meet later in the blog post.
REMINDER: This week we will ALL meet in West Sacramento for practice on Monday at 5:30. The meeting location is Stonegate Elementary. We will do our warmup run from there to the Lock Hills trails on Locks Drive, where the workout will take place. On Wednesday we will hold practices at both locations – in Davis (on the Greenbelt in the Northstar neighborhood, near the Baja Mini Playground) and West Sacramento at the Bridgeway Lakes Boathouse off of Southport Parkway south of Marshall Rd.
This week we have our first cross country meet of the season! We will discuss at practice what racing is like in cross country, how it differs from track or road racing, and how to make sure each athlete is prepared Saturday morning to have his or her best experience!
The meet we will be running at is the Lagoon Valley Classic at Lagoon Valley Park near Vacaville. Our athletes will compete in the 1.5-mile Middle School/Club Race which will begin at 8am, which means we need our runners to arrive by 7am so they have ample time to warm up, get their bibs pinned to their uniforms, and get to the starting line.
In order for us to register your athlete for each meet, you must indicate your intention to attend on the TeamSNAP app. This is a helpful blog post describing how to register for each meet (you can skip STEP 2 for the cross country season). We have to know well in advance (usually the week prior to the meet) as registration closes early. If you want to participate, please talk with Coach Haley or me about the race so we can answer any questions you might have.
The meet includes high school races following our youth races, and so there will be a lot of cars arriving early to get ready for the many races that morning. Plan ahead and expect it to take some time to park. However, once our races are over, you can leave! I suspect we will be ready to go by 9 or 9:15, so you’ll still have the rest of your weekend to do the things you want to do!
This week are practices become challenging. This is when we begin really preparing our athletes for the rigors of cross country – so prepare accordingly! Make sure your kiddos have been drinking water before practice, and have had a good snack – fueling is critical for them to get the most out of their time.
