Time for Our Hawks to Fly!
This week we have practice at our regular locations on Monday (in both West Sac and Davis), and then we will all meet in West Sacramento at the Bridgeway Lakes Boathouse on Wednesday.
This coming Saturday, April 11th, is our next meet which is going to be held at Armijo High School in Fairfield. The timing for the meet looks like it will be similar to the past meet: the 1500m races are scheduled to begin at 9am, so athletes need to arrive by 8am, while the 800m will probably begin around 1pm (though we don’t know for sure as it is dependent on how quickly the events go beforehand).
Please let us know if you are interested in attending, it is open to anyone on the team. We must hear from you by Tuesday for us to be sure we can get your athlete registered. Here is a blog post that describes how to register for meets.
In last week’s blog, I included the fact that consistency is the key to improvement in distance running – but what does that mean for youth runners? I think you all know that with the Hawks, we work with all of our athletes to avoid doing too much. There is a reason. It is certainly possible for a youth to run 5-7 days and stack on 25 to 40 miles per week – in fact there are teams who encourage that much work and athletes who can run incredible times because of it. But we want our athletes to do well as youth but continue to grow and improve as they compete in high school, or even college, and it is hard to do that when you’re already putting so much mileage on your legs as a youth.
With that in mind, we design practice weeks with, at most, 4 running days (not including meets) because we want our athletes to work hard when we are together, but also recover and have fun when we don’t have practices. So being consistent to the Hawks just means running 3-4 times per week, every week, through the season and off-season. These regular weeks begin to add up when the athletes just put in the time, and for most athletes it leads to better running form (naturally as their bodies get more efficient), faster times, and more enjoyment from the sport. If any of this is confusing, please feel free to reach out to Coach Haley or I and we are happy to discuss further.
