Hawks Are At It Again!

ree

NOTE: PRACTICE ON MONDAY, MEMORIAL DAY, AT RIVER CITY IF YOU CAN MAKE IT!

As I sit here on a Sunday afternoon I am reflecting on the virtues of our youth racing club. As I finish up my fifth track season with the Hawks, I am just simply amazed at the growth I’ve seen in the athletes. While we have a number of very talented runners who flourish under the challenging work we serve up each week, I’ve seen enough to know that a competitive youth running club teaches lessons to any athlete interested in improvement.  It is clear to me that every youth that comes to the Hawks with a willingness to embrace our culture finds inner strength and power that would be difficult to unearth in most other youth sport programs.  I am so thankful for the opportunity I have had to see kids grow in strength and confidence as they learn that hard work and commitment yield results over time. I am amazed to watch these kids continue beyond our Hawks team to become successful, incredible people on whatever path they choose, and I like to think the lessons learned through distance training plays at least some part in that growth. It is truly remarkable.

This weekend our Hawks competed at the Tom Moore Invite in Modesto! Also, a special shout out to the parents and coaches that made the drive to enable these Hawks to soar in the Central Valley – especially Coaches Haley, Molly, and Blake who were there to help the Hawks succeed!

As usual, our Hawks competed well in Modesto and delivered a bunch more personal bests! Too many to list in total, but a few great stories: The Hooks ran into traffic on the way and barely arrived in time. Jai ran to the stadium to make it to his race, and still PR’d! Not to be outdone, Gyan ran a huge PR as well, bringing his best 800 time from last year of 3:27 to a new personal best of 2:39! Cal had a stellar weekend, getting second in the javelin and third in the discus (in his first competition in the event)! Luke ran big PRs in both the 1500 and the 800! Sonia won the javelin and also ran a PR in the 3k! Cam, Mia, and Evan all ran PRs in the 1500. What amazing performances over two days!

As mentioned in the Team App, our next meet is June 7-8 at the Golden West Invite in Rancho Cordova. Unfortunately, registration is due tomorrow (Monday the 26th), even though we don’t have confirmed schedules. If your athlete is hoping to compete, please RSVP asap on the team app.
